Scholarships provide a great opportunity for students, particularly in developing countries, to access higher education at tertiary institutions across the world.

Through a scholarship, a student is able to study at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels for free or at a reduced cost.

The purpose of this article is to highlight 15 scholarships for young women in the Caribbean region to pursue tertiary studies abroad.

Basic Terms and Concepts

Scholarship: A grant-in-aid to a student (as by a college or foundation).

Full Scholarship: A full ride scholarship is an award that covers all expenses related with college. This includes tuition, books, fees, room and board, and possibly even living costs. The goal is to remove any need for additional financial aid.

Partial Scholarship: A partial academic scholarship is a monetary award covering some, or part, of the tuition, room and board, books, or other associated fees for a student enrolled in a college or university.

Undergraduate degree: Undergraduate degree programs are the first level of post-secondary education students can pursue and involve a mix of general education requirements and courses specific to one’s particular area of study or degree specialization.

Postgraduate/ graduate degree: A graduate degree, however, is any degree students may pursue after earning their bachelor’s. This can include master’s degrees and Ph.Ds.

[1] The Yale Scholarship

Type of award: Partial Scholarship; Undergraduate Scholarship

Country: USA

Yale’s need-based grant aid for undergraduates, the Yale Scholarship, is a gift and thus never has to be repaid. The Yale Scholarship can vary from a few hundred dollars to over $70,000 per year; the average Yale need-based scholarship is over $50,000.

[2] Türkiye Scholarships

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships

Country: Turkey

Türkiye Scholarships is a government-funded higher education scholarship program run by the Republic of Türkiye for international students. The primary purpose of Türkiye Scholarships is to provide equal opportunities to successful students around the world in order for them to receive scholarship education at international standards. It is also aimed to develop mutual cooperation between Turkey and other countries and to contribute to regional and global development in many fields from academia to art, from economy to literature, technology to architecture.

[3] MEXT Scholarship

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: Japan

The MEXT Scholarship is a Japanese government scholarship that supports foreign students who study in higher education institutions, selected on the recommendation of Japanese Embassy/Consulate General, University, or Authority.

[4] Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program

Type of award: Partial Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: France

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs. It gives opportunity to the future foreign decision-makers of the private and public sectors, in priority areas of study, and encourages applicants up to 25 years old from developing countries at master’s level, and applicants up to 30 years old from developing and industrialized countries at PhD level.

[5] Fulbright Scholarship

Type of award: Partial/ Full Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: USA

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals and artists from abroad to study and conduct research in the United States. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. Approximately 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies. All Foreign Student Program applications are processed by these offices.

[6] Utrecht Excellence Scholarships for International Students

Type of award: Partial Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: The Netherlands

The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship (UES) is a highly selective programme meant for talented international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA = the EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) who seek to pursue a Master’s degree at Utrecht University.

[7] Reach Oxford Scholarships for Developing Country Students

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Undergraduate Scholarship

Country: UK

A number of Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) are offered to students from low-income countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because suitable educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries.

(Students from T&T are not eligible to apply for this scholarship)

[8] Boston University Presidential Scholarship for International Students

Type of award: Partial Scholarship; Undergraduate Scholarship

Country: USA

Each year, the Board of Admissions awards the Presidential Scholarship to incoming first-year students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. In addition to being among the most academically talented students, Presidential Scholars demonstrate excellence beyond the classroom and are leaders in their schools and communities. This $25,000 tuition scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at BU.

Country: China

Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. As China’s role in global trends continues to grow, the success of future leaders in any sector depends upon an immersive understanding of the country and its culture. A one-year, fully-funded master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Schwarzman Scholars is designed to build a global community of future leaders who will serve to deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world.

[10] Holland Scholarship

Type of award: Partial Scholarship; Undergraduate & Graduate Scholarships

Country: The Netherlands

The Holland Scholarship is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s in the Netherlands. This scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as well as several Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship amounts to € 5,000. Scholars will receive this in the first year of their studies.

Country: Hungary

Stipendium Hungaricum, being the most prestigious higher education scholarship programme of the Hungarian Government, offers a wide range of courses for international students of excellent academic track record. The scholarship aims to support the internationalization of the Hungarian higher education and its constant development, to strengthen the international relations of the academic and research community, and to promote the good reputation and competitiveness of the Hungarian higher education throughout the world.

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: UK

Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarships and fellowships programme. Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, they offer individuals who show potential to inspire, inform, and influence positive change the opportunity to study at a UK university to gain a UK educational qualification. The mission of the Chevening programme is to support UK foreign policy priorities and achieve FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers.

[14] Commonwealth Scholarship

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: UK

Commonwealth Scholarships are given to talented individuals with the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage. As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth, each year around 800 students are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees with UK universities.

[15] Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Type of award: Full Scholarship; Postgraduate Scholarship

Country: Severall countries throughout Europe

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are delivered by multiple higher education institutions and run across various countries. They are distinguished by their academic excellence and by their high level of integration. Students at master’s level from all over the world can apply. In addition, scholarships are available for the best students. The Erasmus Mundus Catalogue is updated yearly and lists the Master’s programmes that are currently supported by the European Union and that may offer Erasmus Mundus scholarships.
